If we have an opinion about or emotional reaction to any problem then we are already personally involved. It is, after all, considered by us to be a “problem” rather than just a situation that exists as a fact in the world. We are already committed, based on what we want or need the resolution of that problem to be. The outcome, whether we can influence it or not, will have a commensurately powerful effect on us as well. We are, in effect, at the mercy of life, or at least believe ourselves to be. For the most part we are powerless to do anything about it.
But we can make a decision about how to live that life, one that involves an essentially simple decision or a series of resolutions. It is important to keep repeating them to ourselves because the lessons will be hard, the challenges will be difficult, and progress will be slow. Life-changing decisions are like that, I suppose, though it would be nice to be able to just click our fingers.
