There are, I have come to understand, recurring themes and consistent patterns of unworthy behaviour that wind their way through the years of our lives and many aspects of our character. Recognition of their prevalence can be at times disheartening and frustrating, but we ignore them at our peril and cannot do so. The courageous act of meeting their challenges, and the honesty and good humour that we might bring to the task, is what may in the end be the only thing that defines us as men. What other great challenges and tasks lie before us if not the successful learning of how to live? Certainly it is what must guide our thoughts and direct our activities. A summation and assessment of it is for another time, and for others to make.
